  • This Master’s level course is part of the requirement for the Bilingual Education Extension Advanced Certificate for New York State teachers. This hybrid course operates in a flipped classroom model, integrating VoiceThread, the clicker-like web based app Kahoot, and full integration with Blackboard. It introduces students to research in first and second language acquisition as it pertains to bilingual children. This research prepares language educators to advocate for students and provide guidance in making informed choices as classroom instructors.

LNG/SPV312 Bilingualism (Spring 2014, Fall 2014, Spring 2015)

  • Adapted for students in speech pathology, linguistics, and education programs, this class explores language variation and contact; effects of bilingualism on the brain and speech-language disorders; the sociolinguistics of bilingualism; and bilingual education in New York City. This class is conducted in a hybrid format, using a flipped classroom model. Several lectures are presented online, with class time used for workshops and discussion. Students present projects online using VoiceThread.

LNG160/SPV240 Introduction to Linguistics (Fall 2012, Spring 2013, Spring 2014)

  • This class introduces the core topics of linguistics, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. Students research and present related topics such as sociolinguistics, neurolinguistics, and language acquisition.

  • Instructed students of all ages and all levels  in English conversation. Also taught sections on pronunciation and test preparation.
